There are a variety of factors that influence the nursing shortage: if and when the Developed World experiences economic recovery, age and democratic factors, especially the baby boomers, and public policy changes such as the Affordable Care Act. Nearly 3 million Boomers will age into Medicare every year for the next 30 years and this will help to keep the demand for nurses strong over the course of the next several decades. These days, however, many mature nurses are deferring their retirements, for many, a result of economic uncertainty. Nevertheless, there is a big chunk of nurses who earned their initial degree in the '70s. In fact, this older generation of nurses represent approximately one-third of the nursing workforce and they can't defer retirement forever. The better the economy, the more temptation for nurses to retire.
